4 Tips on Picking the Right Siding and Trim Colors

One of the best things about today’s exterior products, like James Hardie® siding, is the wide selection of colors that lets you hone in on your exterior color palette exactly as you wanted it. However, if you’re unsure which color to choose, read on as S.I.S. Exterior Renovations shares some tips on how to choose the right siding and trim colors.

  1. Look at your roof first. The most important thing to remember about exterior color palettes is that all components have to work together. Unless your roof is also due for replacement, your first consideration is how the trim and siding would look with your roof. In addition to color, consider siding profile, direction of travel, and texture, as they can also contribute to the overall look.
  2. Say hello to your neighbors. Have you noticed how some neighborhoods seem to stick to a certain range of colors, even those not governed by an HOA? It’s because similar-but-not-the-same colors allow enough room for a home to stand out, but not too much as it would stick out like a sore thumb. Smaller areas like entry doors allow the homeowner to add pops of color if needed. Taking a short walk or drive around a few blocks down will give you a few ideas on which siding would look great on your home.
  3. Research your home’s architectural style. If your home is based on a particular style, taking the time to research traditionally-used colors can go a long way in choosing yours, as well as adding a touch of authenticity. A locally-based siding contractor may also be familiar with your home’s architectural style.
  4. Look for permanent components. Your home may have permanent components like stone or exposed brick. While it is perfectly fine to paint over them to match your planned color palette, you should also consider taking a different tact and show off their natural colors — which means your siding and trim colors should work with them.
  5. Analyze the Amount of Sun Exposure. Understanding how and where the sun shines on your home is important when making colour selections. If the front of your home is mostly shaded during the day, whether by neighboring houses,  heavy trees, or simply the sun’s angle, it might be best to work in lighter pallets rather than darker ones.
